JAMAICA BEACH - In just a few more days it will have been 14 months since Hurricane Ike visited the beaches of Galveston County, yet there remains homes like this one that have been abandoned, left untouched by the owner, abandoned for the state or federal government to tear down and clean up.

It is likely the owner of this house was paid for it's loss by the State of Texas or with federal funds doled out by the federal govenrment following the big gully wash called Ike.

Whatever happened, it remains a blight, an eyesore on the beach of Jamaica Beach and it's doubtful that anyone, especially the powers-that-be in Jamaica Beach, really cares what it looks like and there is no telling how much longer this battered beach house, and others like it will remain right where it is as the winds and tides eat it away a little at a time over the months and years ahead.

Comments:

I live in Jamaica Beach and this is common problem throughout our area. I understand that money is tight for most people these days and repairs and clean-up are costly. Jamaica Beach still needs some standards in place for these situations. There are falling-down houses and ruined bulkheads everywhere and no one is doing a thing about it.

There aint but so much money in the world. Dunno the reason the structure remains. If it occurred to me as it did these folks,I could not afford to tear it down nor repair it. Unique situation that caused this and it may well be a good write off and was not wanted anyway. But I couldnt afford it. I could burn it but then.............

Yes, Myself and my wife feel Jamacia Beach is on the decline, that is why we plan to move.

This is not just in Jamaica Beach, this is all over Galveston. In Bayou Shore the mess is unbelievable. There are houses just waiting for a good wind to blow them down. The rat problem in the area has been discussed in the Galveston Newspaper and all over. Then you can go to the East End of the island and see some house that have fallen in. Nope the far west of Galveston is just another story NOT the main story!

These homes are a disturbing alert that policy is required. Can my public confirm any precedent for land-attachment or lien-mortgage, whereby monies for public safety protection, as determined, can be recovered by custom, to relieve our area and aid owners recovering disrepair. These building dispositions are not without assessments of financial responsiblity. Does Galveston government(s) pursue discussion to make known areas of relief, or potential areas of relief. Is there relief being proposed? This writer welcomes comments.
