The Wharton County Jail became an all-boys club on Thursday as all nine of the facility's female inmates were transferred to the Calhoun County Jail in response to a remedial order issued by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.
"We were put under a remedial order by the commission for non-compliance for manpower and overcrowding,"Wharton County Sheriff Jess Howell said. "We (Wharton County Judge John Murrile, Howell and Jail Captain T.J. Sparkman) were up in Austin before the jail commission to answer the non-compliance question. We had an issue of over crowding and had inmates bedded down on the floor in the common areas."
