Galveston County Sheriff's deputies were called about 7:46 AM Saturday when a motorist traveling along that isolated stretch of IH-45 northbound feeder road near Mile Post 6 discovered a one-car collision.
Deputies believe 26-year-old Elias Vargas was driving a car north along the feeder road when his vehicle left the roadway and struck a guard rail. It appeared Vargas was partially ejected from the vehicle's right front window, with his head striking the same guard rail. He suffered massive head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by Galveston County Medical Examiner's Office investigators. An autopsy is pending.
Deputies learned Vargas apparently had been at a party in Texas City and left there between 1:00 and 2:00 AM. Their investigation at the scene indicated the collision occurred several hours prior to it being reported. The area where his vehicle was found is not heavliy traveled nor easily visible from IH-45's main lanes.
The investigation into circumstances that may have led to the collision is continuing.
