SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas - The Coast Guard rescued five people in two separate incidents approximately 25 miles north of Port Isabel, Monday.

A watchstander at Coast Guard Station South Padre Island initially received notification from the Cameron County Sheriff's office that two men had reported that their boat was taking on water.

Coast Guard Station South Padre Island dispatched a 33-foot Special Purpose Craft-Law Enforcement boat to the scene, but was forced to return to the station due to heavy weather. Once the weather subsided, the SPC-LE boat was dispatched to search for the two men.

While enroute to the reported position, the SPC-LE boat crew located three people beset by the weather on a fishing cabin along the Intracoastal Waterway. The boat crew diverted to assist the three people whose boat had broken in half against the cabin pilings in the heavy seas and high winds.

After completing the rescue, the SPC-LE boat crew continued north to respond to the initial distress call. The crew found an 18-foot skiff adrift with two people aboard approximately 1-mile to the north of the previous rescue position.

The SPC-LE boat crew transported the five survivors to Port Mansfield.

No injuries were reported.
